The Science Behind Pheromones
Did you know that nonverbal communication plays a big role in the initial attraction between two individuals? A big part of nonverbal communication cues are related to scent, and what our noses can pick up from the other person.
What are pheromones?
The origin of the word pheromone can be traced to the Greek words "pherein", which means, "to transmit", and "hormon", meaning, "to stimulate". Based from the source of the word pheromone, we can derive that a pheromone is a chemical substance that is created by an individual, belonging to a specific species, that is transferred to an individual of a similar species, who then becomes stimulated upon receiving the substance.
Human pheromones are chemical substances that are found in sweat, which surrounding individuals are able to pick up on a subconscious level, through the olfactory bulb in the nose. The olfactory nerves then send a signal to the hypothalamus, which releases hormones that promote sexual arousal.
Numerous experiments have studied the role of pheromones in human interactions. It has been observed that specific pheromones can elicit certain responses, and can make a person emit a certain "vibe" or aura.
